Sole Fitness make a point that their latest Sole E35 Elliptical is rated a “best buy” by leading consumer websites and magazines, so I thought it was worthwhile doing a review on it. A further check on customer reviews on Amazon 
supported the claim, where it received a very credible 4.5 stars out of five. So here’s my Sole E35 Elliptical Review.

Construction
Sole Fitness have a good reputation for solid construction. Sure, it makes the unit weightier, but the Sole E35 is fitted with a heavy 25-pound flywheel and a high gear ratio to provide a silky smooth operation. Nothing comes near it with units in the same price bracket.
Ergonomics
Sole Fitness have really done their homework here. I’ve lost track of the number of ellipticals I’ve worked out on where I’ve experienced the ‘numb toes’ syndrome. We’ve all known it’s caused by the elliptical motion not being aligned with the natural movement patterns of the human body; but we’ve endured it because of the great benefits of using an elliptical. Other symptoms can be mild pain in the knee and hip joints.
I’m happy to say that Sole have addressed this with this latest model. They engaged Richard DeKok, P.T., M.T.C., of St. Bernard’s Industrial Rehabilitation Center in Jonesboro Arkansas to do some serious research into these issues and this is the changes they’ve made.
- Make the angle of the footpad user adjustable to one of three angles at the bottom of the elliptical stroke – zero degrees or flat, five degrees or ten degrees to get your weight off the ball of your foot. You will simply find the setting that works best for you and you’re away. Result: No more numb toes!
- Turn the footpads inwards by about 2 degrees. This tiny adjustment puts your ankle, knee and hip joints back into what we call ‘neutral alignment’. Result: Reduced joint ache!
Ramp Incline Adjustment
The ramp incline adjustment is controlled by buttons on the console and on the swing arms, which is handy. Of course, the ramp incline changes automatically when any built-in workout program is selected and activated.
Console
The Sole E35 elliptical console is quite easy to operate with the program buttons laid out and labelled clearly across the top. The screen is divided into three sections, the top being the Data Window (Pulse, Time, Distance, Calories), the middle displaying the program profiles and your progress through them and the lower Message Window displaying Program Name, RPM, Watts, Laps and Incline). All nice and straightforward.
Programs
This elliptical trainer supports a number of programs:
- Manual – as the name implies, this is where you take total control of the workload yourself. Adjustments to the workload (ramp incline, workload level) are made via the console as the exercise program progresses.
- Preset – These include Hill, Cardio, Fat Burn, Strength and Interval. These vary the workload and incline patterns to achieve the desired intensity.
- User Defined – There are two of these. If the preset programs don’t suit for any particular reason you can define your own. To program these, just press either ‘User 1’ or ‘User 2’ button, then ‘Enter’; and the display will guide you simply and easily through the whole setup process.
- Heart Rate – These two programs are intended to focus either on cardiovascular fitness (train
ing for the heart and lungs) or weight loss/control. The Sole E35 Elliptical comes standard with a heart rate chest strap transmitter, and this heart rate data is used by the computer on the elliptical to dynamically vary the resistance of the pedals to keep your heart rate within a particular range. All programs on the E35 elliptical require you to enter basic data such as your age, weight and desired exercise time to make all this meaningful of course!
Assembly
Like any piece of equipment purchased online, it does require home assembly! You’re looking at somewhere between two to three hours of work. Sole do offer a “Turn Key Delivery” option for an additional $239.00, where they put it together in a room of your choice, test it and then take away the boxes and junk. If you do decide to go the DIY way, they do provide a series of Assembly videos on their site that are very good. Add-ons
The console comes fitted with a cooling fan and audio input/speakers. Neither of these are particularly effective. The strengths of this elliptical trainer are in the main components, so don’t make any decision based on this!

In my opinion this has got to represent one of the best buys out there at the moment if you are shopping around for an elliptical trainer. It is a no-nonsense, easy to use, well-engineered unit that will give you years of service without any hassles. Give it a try, you won’t regret it. I’m rating it 4.75 stars out of 5.
